A message from Althea
I fell in love with Malawi during my first visit in 2009, it was my inspiration for starting my own business and for having the courage to start my own skincare business, it was something I'd always dreamt of doing for a long time. I have over the years, come to love the country and the people, it's one of the poorest countries in the world and at the same time, one of the richest in terms of its natural beauty and the natural warmth of the people. We do all we can to support schools and local communities in the poorest part of the country, and we give them, and they also give to us;humility, hope and belief in ourselves.
Malawi, known as the warm heart of Africa, is situated on the Eastern side of Africa and under a days drive from South Africa. In many of the poorer villages, very few children have an education so they cannot read or write, even today many children do not attend school, but instead have to work in fields to cultivate food for the families.
On my second visit to Malawi, I met a young man called Brian, he was only 24, but I was inspired by his dedication to help these children. So I decided that we would help him set up the school and support him by providing books, teaching aids and to help him with the cost of running the school.
We continue to support Brian and his growing team of community workers and as our business grows, we will step up the support we offer. The school is now full to the brim housing over 300 pupils ranging in age from 5 to 16.
Our future plans are to build a new purpose-built community school for children who cannot attend the mainstream local schools, and provide teaching aids and resources, a fully equipped library,(as the nearest one is almost 200 miles away), preschool/nursery and a education learning centre, where the women in the village can learn crafts and reading and writing. We have a strong commitment to helping people in Malawi which is one of the poorest countries in the world.
