We recently won the Green Parent Beauty Awards, which we are delighted about. The ingredients in these products were inspired by my grandmother and include, coconut, jojoba, cocoa butter and aloe vera.
I can remember the first time that I smelt coconut oil, I was very young and my mother was using it in my hair. I can still remember that lovely exotic candy sweet smell, and I kept wishing that I could eat it.
My grandmother had always lived in the country and lived off the land. Everything she used came from the land. She used almost any plant or herb that was grown on their land for something - cooking, drinking, for medicine and for her skin. She made her own drinking chocolate from dried cocoa beans, and she extracted the butter for her skin.
My grandmother always grew aloe vera in her back yard and my mother said that as a little girl, she used to go into the yard and cut off a piece to wash her hair and even her clothes. She also said that she would put some on her skin to protect it from the sun.
My grandmother used everything coconut daily - for baking, cooking, for washing her hair and for looking after her skin. Mum says it used to make her hair and skin smell lovely, and leave them feeling silky smooth and glistening. My mother left the Caribbean when she was 24, and for most of her life before leaving the Caribbean she had never visited a supermarket, as they only had them in the towns, and their nearest one was over 70 miles away. 'We had everything we needed on our land so I could find plants and fruits to use on my skin and in my hair, it was a truly natural existence' says mum.
Thea Baby Naturals was inspired by nature and my grandmother. This lady was incredible, she reared her own chickens and raised cattle, and she even delivered her favourite pet, a calf that she called Christmas (as she delivered her one Christmas Day). My grandmother loved using oils for her skin and her favourites were coconut oil, aloe vera oil and cocoa butter. Thea Baby Naturals contains all these ingredients, which are just perfect for babies, young children and adults.
Coconut oil is great for baby eczema and for the hair. Aloe vera, is what my mother says is 'natures gift to man', as it can be used for almost anything, as a baby shampoo, baby wash or even in a natural baby lotion. It's one of the greatest ingredients nature has to offer.
It's fantastic to have won these award for our natural mother and baby skincare products and I have my grandmother to thank for that.
